Opposition to proposed Ferry project

A private company, Carlingford Lough Car Ferry Ltd, are in the planning stages for a Passenger & Vehicle Ferry crossing between Greencastle, Co. Down and Greenore, Co. Louth.

The proposed ferry would have capacity for 40-50 cars and/or lorry/bus equivalents and have a half hourly sailing between Greenore and Greencastle for up to 14 hours of the day.

Development would involve widening the existing single lane road to 5.5m wide with 1m verges on either side and adding a three lane roadway at Greencastle point. A slipway would be required 110m long and 18m wide extending from the road into the sea. A toilet block would also need to be built. The stated aim of the project is to promote tourism in the Cooley and Mourne areas.
